News from Sociology of Migration and Education - New book by Dr. Katty Nöllenburg

The increasing tension between religiosity and secularism becomes particularly apparent in schools, with considerable potential for conflict, when Muslim pupils' prayer times overlap with their school days. Up to now, this phenomenon has been examined in politics, the media, administration and science almost exclusively from a deficit-oriented perspective, with a view to pedagogical challenges for teachers and questions of radicalization prevention. This study is the first to focus research and analysis on the perspectives of Muslim youths.
Based on the ways of thinking and acting of students who want to pray, a typology is developed with recourse to Norbert Elias' figuration theory and Erving Goffman's interaction theory. At the same time, these classic approaches are placed in relation to current debates in migration society.
The study thus links central questions of educational policy, school practice and the guarantee of religious freedom under fundamental rights in the context of a secular state - from the perspective of religious pupils. Beyond the specific object of investigation, this book illustrates the social relevance of the topic and opens up new perspectives on the negotiation of religiosity and secularity in plural societies.
