Dr. Frerk Blome will give a systematic overview of empirical research and theoretical explanations of social origin and inequality in the German higher education and science system. This will be followed by an open space for discussion.

Dr. Frerk Blome will give a presentation on 06 May 2026 from 12:00 - 13:00 entitled: "The long shadow of social origin - inequalities in the German higher education and science system" as part of the UA Ruhr Annual Program Antidiscrimination 2026.

The lecture will provide a systematic overview of empirical research and theoretical explanations of social background and inequality in the German higher education and science system. Initially, the focus will be on students: differences in access to higher education, study progression and experiences will be examined. This is followed by a look at academic careers, where the few studies available show a clear underrepresentation of people from disadvantaged social classes.
