News from Sociology of Migration and Education - New publication by Dr. Thomas Kemper and Liubovi Colbasevici

Between 2011 and 2021, the number of people with a Moroccan migration background in Germany almost doubled. Nevertheless, there are few findings on the educational situation of Moroccan pupils in Germany. Using data from the official school statistics and the microcensus, this article examines the development of educational participation and school success of Moroccan pupils (in Germany and in selected federal states), taking into account nationality and migration background, with the latter also being differentiated according to generational status.
The results are interpreted on the basis of theories of social inequality and taking into account the socio-economic situation of the Moroccan population in Germany. Overall, a positive development in the educational situation of pupils with a Moroccan background can be observed. The analysis shows that the trend is due less to a change in the socio-economic situation than to a longer period of residence and an improvement in legal status. The results are supplemented by an analysis of current statistical data for Spain and the Netherlands. Link to the publication
